Disney Ephemera

Ephemera sounds so much more sophisticated than simply "paper", but that's what it refers to: collectible paper items. Disney Studios and the theme parks like Disneyland and Walt Disney World create some simply amazing documents, portfolios, and flyers that usually include some wonderful art or exceptional information about their creations and the creative geniuses behind them. We were lucky enough to get many of these fun items signed by the artists who created them. A word of caution: this is a very addictive form of collectibles.

Donald Duck's 50th Birthday
Clarence Nash Autographed Press Kit

Who's Got A Sunny Disposition? Well, contrary to his theme song, Donald is, of course, best known for his blustery temper tantrums and his distinctive voice. Imitated by millions, equalled by none, Donald's voice was the creation of Disney Legend Clarence "Ducky" Nash. A true gentleman and quite the talented performer, Clarence made Donald into the character we all love. This rare press kit was issued by Disney in 1984 to commemorate Donald's 50th Birthday, just a few months before Mr. Nash passed away in February, 1985. The kit comes in a standard-sized glossy folder, as shown here with the Donald's 50th Birthday logo printed on it. Inside are 4 black & white publicity photos, 7 35mm color slides showing Donald in his most famous roles and poses, and several press releases on special 50th Anniversary stationery. Several of the printed pieces have light transferred ink stains, but the slides are pristine. The folder is signed on the cover "Hi Michael! Donald Duck and Clarence Nash." The signature is light, but very legible, and the folder has some creasing along the binding. The 4 press releases include Nash's complete professional biography and a history of Donald (who is actually first mentioned in a 1931 Mickey Mouse book!). A real treasure for fans of the duck!

Autographed Pete's Dragon Photo

A brilliant piece for the die-hard fan of Disney Animation and the theme parks. This is an 8x10 publicity photo from the live-action feature "Pete's Dragon" that featured the lovable animated character of Eliot the Dragon, who was the creation of Ken Anderson whose autograph is on the print. Ken was one of the famed group of Disney animators known as Walt's Nine Old Men and who Walt always referred to as his "Jack Of All Trades" because he was so good at so many things. Ken was a favorite of Walt who used his artistic genius in all of the animated features from Snow White through The Jungle Book. Ken was also one of the first Imagineers who helped design Disneyland, second only perhaps to Marc Davis in his overall influence on the park. An Official Disney Legend, Ken sadly passed away on January 13, 1993. This print makes for a wonderful keepsake of one of his last major animation projects for Disney Animation.

Bugs Bunny 50th Birthday Magazine with Sericel

In 1990, on the heels of a similar promotion for Mickey Mouse, Warner Bros. issued a commemorative magazine that celebrated Bugs Bunny's 50th Anniversary. The magazine included a 7x10 inch printed cel of Bugs sitting in a movie theater, complete with a nice background. The magazine itself has all sorts of treats for fans of the Wascaly Wabbit, including interviews with Chuck Jones and Friz Freleng, the two men most associated with Bugs over the years. Real animation fans will also get a kick out of the dozens of "birthday cards" from famous comic strip artists from Charles Shultz to Matt Groening. There are articles galore, including Leonard Maltin's picks of the 10 best Bugs Bunny cartoons, and Steven Spielberg introducing "Tiny Toons" Roughly 60 pages in all. Just a wonderful and very affordable collectible.

Disneyland In Natural Color Guidebook 50th Anniversary Edition

As a part of Disneyland's 50th Anniversary celebration in 2005, they reproduced the first souvenir guide that contained color photographs of the park. The original souvenir guide contained only artists' drawings of the park, and Disneyland sold thousands of them until late in 1955 when they released this book. The reproduction is excellent. You'd be hard pressed to point out any major flaws. Considering original copies of the guidebook sell for over $200.00, this is a real bargain for collectors of Disneyland paper memoribelia on a budget.

Animator Eric Goldberg Autograph

Like most Disney fans, we first became aware of Eric Goldberg's many talents when he was the lead animator of the Genie in "Aladdin" He has since gone on to create many wonderful characters, he co-directed "Pocahontas" and directed several sequences in "Fantasia 2000" - "The Carnival of the Animals", "Rhapsody In Blue" based on the George Gershwin music and the art of Al Hirshfeld, and the house favorite, "Saint-Saens" featuring the yo-yo playing flamingo. This 8-1/2x11" litho was issued by ASIFA Hollywood at their annual convention in Hollywood in 1996. Its a self-charicature of Eric and he was gracious enough to autograph this piece for us at that event.

Jafar Litho Signed by Andreas Deja

Noted Disney animator Andreas Deja really hit his stride when he created the evil Jafar in 1992's "Aladdin" He had worked for Disney for nearly ten years when that film was made. This 8-1/2x11" litho was a convention gift at the 1993 National Fantasy Fan Club convention where Andreas appeared as a speaker and autographed this litho for us. Its showing some age with very minor corner crumpling, but perfect for matting.

Storyboard Magazine Back Issues

Storyboard Magazine was produced in the early 1990's by an amazing individual named Steve Fiott. Steve was an artist who worked at Disney for some time, and obviously shared our fondness for Walt and animation. The magazine was printed on heavy, glossy stock and not cheap pulp like many amateur collector's magazines of the day. Steve was in constant contact with artists and animators at Disney during the rebirth of Disney Animation in the era of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" and "The Little Mermaid", and so he was able to write particularly detailed and knowledgeable articles about Disney animation, Disney theme parks, and Disney collectibles through direct interviews. He also sponsored a few Disney collectibles events in the Disneyland area, at which he was able to get these normally invisible artists to appear and share their knowledge and experiences. Steve was particularly generous to Maggie and me when we were still very new as dealers, and he was especially helpful in marketing my book about Walt Disney, for which I will be eternally grateful. Sadly, Steve died unexpectedly on June 6, 1995 while on a trip to Burbank to arrange appearances by animators for his next event. We present these special autographed copies of Storyboard as a tribute to Steve, and we hope that you enjoy them.

Storyboard Magazine June 1993 Aladdin Issue
Autographed by Finn & Bancroft

This is the June/July 1993 edition of Storyboard Magazine that featured "Aladdin" which was released in November of the previous year. The cover photo shows Will Finn - the jockular lead animator of the evil Iago the Parrot. Will appeared at a National Fantasy Fan Club convention in January 1993 where we did a dead-on imitation of Gilbert Gottfried. The hours of listening to the Aladdin soundtrack during animation apparently paid off in many ways for Will. To Will's left is a then-up-and-coming animator Tony Bancroft who was on Finn's team on Iago. This magazine is autographed by both Will Finn and Tony Bancroft.

Storyboard Mag. Aug/Sept 1993 Walt Disney Tribute
Autographed by Van France

This is the Aug./Sept. 1993 edition of Storyboard Magazine that featured a tribute to Walt Disney that featured a charming picture of Walt and his wife Lillian. It was issued not long after a scandalous book about Walt Disney was released. The magazine featured rememberances by many family members and people who worked with Walt Disney such as Walt's wife Lillian Disney, his daughter Diane Disney Miller, animators Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, Ward Kimball, and Ken Anderson, and the legendary Van Arsdale France who was the founder of Disney University - the training school for Disneyland Cast Members. Van signed this copy of Storyboard on the page that features his picture and his tribute to Walt.

Van France was a charming and gracious man who I was lucky to get to know briefly. Maggie and I met him when we were on a panel of authors together at one of Steve Fiott's events at The Disneyland Hotel. During the event, Maggie and I snuck off to the nearby Pan Pacific Hotel for lunch. Van happened by at the same time and joined us. We spoke little about Disney matters. Maggie and Van were closer in age and shared many similar experiences, and I'm so old-fashioned that I had a wonderful time just listening to them. In the next couple of years, Van always made a point of joining us for a meal or a snack, sometimes including his wife. So beyond considering him a Disney celebrity, we counted him as a friend and were very sad when he passed away in October, 1999. He had been enshrined earlier that decade with Disneyland's highest honor - his own window on Main Street that reads "Van Arsdale France. Founder and Professor Emeritus, Disney Universities". Be sure to see LaughingPlace.com's article on Van France.
