Did you know that Walt Disney had a private apartment above the firehouse in Disneyland? Phyllis Diller was one of the first female stand-up comics. She can only be described as "zany" thanks to the outrageous wigs she always wore on stage. Her routines featured jokes about her own appearance and her husband, whom she always referred to as "Fang". I'll always remember watching her on TV when she quipped, "He's so lazy that I started giving him pep pills. Now he runs to bed!"
Diller actually started her career in radio in the early 1950's before she first appeared on stage at The Purple Onion in San Francisco in 1955 where she played for 87 straight weeks. Her career exploded once she started appearing on television programs like "The Ed Sullivan Show", "The Jack Paar Show" and "The Tonight Show". She was far more popular than Joan Rivers or Totie Fields, her only real competition in those years. She also appeared in several movies with Bob Hope, with whom she also did some USO shows. Disney fans will know her best as the voice of the Queen in "A Bug's Life" and her line, "It's my lot in life. It's not a lot, but it's my life!" It suited her perfectly. Sadly, she passed away in 2012 at age 95.
This is a 3x5 inch index card autographed by Ms. Diller. We obtained it in-person at a press preview of the "A Bug's Life Mall Tour" in 1998.
