Did you know that Walt Disney had a private apartment above the firehouse in Disneyland? As a prize at an Annual Passholder Event in 1995, we won dinner in that apartment which has been preserved since Walt's passing in 1966. Ed Wynn was already a comedy star in Vaudeville for over two decades, as well as having written, directed and produced several Broadway shows, when he made the transition to radio in the 1930's with his own show "The Texaco Show". He was enormously successful in that medium as well with his own show. He also appeared in several movies in that era. When the late 1940's brought television, he made another transition and was again a huge hit with his own Emmy Award-winning show "Texaco Star Theater" in 1949, reprising his role as the Fire Chief. After three years on television, he was considering retiring when he followed his son Keenan's advice to make a change to drama. He did many serious roles in movies and on television, notably Rod Serling's "Requiem For A Heavyweight", to much acclaim.
His silly voice made him a perfect choice as the voice of The Mad Hatter in Disney's "Alice in Wonderland", but Disney fans may know him best for his many roles in Disney movies in the 1960s from "Mary Poppins" and "Babes in Toyland" to "That Darned Cat" and "The Absent-Minded Professor" in which he was paired with his son Keenan. Sadly, this enormously talented comedian, playright and actor passed away in 1966.
We obtained this Ed Wynn autograph on a page from an autograph book from Phil Sears in 1994. It is inscribed with the year "1933" which Wynn frequently included when he signed his autograph.
