Only Warner Bros. has ever managed to mount a serious challenge to Disney for the title of "best in animation." Most of the Warner Bros. cartoons were shown in theaters long before today's fans were born, and therein lies much of their advantage over their contemporary competitors. Warner Bros. cartoons were primarily aimed at adult moviegoers. Therefore, the humor could be more sophisticated and deal more deliberately with current events, especially during and immediately following World War II. When, around 1960, making cartoons for the movie theaters stopped being at all profitable, Warner Bros. shut down the animation unit. Sadly, they threw away the vast majority of the original artwork they had kept over the years. Television brought back Chuck Jones and Friz Freleng, and they continued to make some wonderful cartoons for many years thereafter. Here we offer you some samples of those fabulous characters.
