Slinky Dog Ordering Information

Slinky Dog

I'm a sterotypical Baby Boomer, but I had never heard of Slinky Dog until I saw him in the original Disney Toy Story movie in 1995. Voiced by the inimitable Jim Varney, who sadly passed away on February 11, 2000, and whose comfy Southern drawl gave Slinky dog a special charm. Slinky dog was Woody's trusted friend and cheerleader in Andy's room. We are proud to carry a few select Slinky Dog toys and collectibles made by the nice folks at Poof-Slinky in Hollidaysburg Pennsylvania.

Classic Slinky Dog

This cute Slinky Dog toy looks just like he did in the Toy Story movies. Slinky Dog has those big hush-puppy eyes, a springy tail, and a Slinky body. Can't you just hear the endearing drawl of the late, great character actor Jim Varney who was the voice of Woody's ol' pal Slink? Slinky Dog comes with a leash so you can pull him along behind you. Its the same Slinky Dog toy as the ones in the Toy Story box, but now he comes in a antique-style box without the Toy Story logo. Made by James Industries.

History of Slinky

Slinky is a classic American Success Story. The inventor of the original Slinky toy is Richard James. James was a naval engineer and in 1945 when working on a tool for the Navy, he had to work with steel springs he was making himself. As he worked on his project, he noticed how the spring steel coils would continue to bounce for a long time after they would fall on the floor. It amused him to watch these springs bounce and squirm and it wasn't long before he knew there was the potential for a toy in front of him.

With $500.00 in hard-earned Navy wages, Richard and Betty James formed the James Spring Company and made their first batch of Slinky toys. They persuaged the Gimbals' Department Store in New York to allow them to sell them during the 1945 Christmas season. The novel Slinky sold out their first batch in one day. From then on, Slinky grew to become one of the most popular toys of the era. The Baby Boom generation all knew the Slinky TV commercial jingle by heart - "It's Slinky, It's Slinky, it's fun for a girl and a boy."

We at Rainbo Animation Art have a soft spot in our hearts for Slinky Dog because Slinky toys was only the second toy company to allow us to buy their toys directly. I was always amazed at the gruff treatment we got from big companies like Mattel and Hasbro. The best part was that the Slinky company staff were so nice to us on the telephone. They didn't care that we were just a small company just starting out. Anytime we had a problem or a question, the folks at Poof-Slinky were always willing to find the solution. The town of Hollidaysburg, PA is right to be proud of their famous citizen toy company - Poof-Slinky.
