Ephemera sounds so much more sophisticated than simply "paper", but that's what it refers to: collectible Disney paper items. The Walt Disney Studios and the theme parks like Disneyland and Walt Disney World create some simply amazing documents, portfolios, and flyers that usually include some wonderful art or exceptional information about their creations and the creative geniuses behind them. We were lucky enough to get many of these fun items signed by the artists who created them. A word of caution: this is a very addictive form of collectibles.
First Disneyland Guidebook from 1955The must-have item for any Disneyland collector is this original guidebook
that was sold when the park first opened in 1955. This illustrated booklet was created before
the park was completed, so there are no actual photographs in it. Late in 1955, it was replaced
by the "Disneyland In Natural Color" guidebook (see the re-issue shown below) which did
contain photographs of the various attractions. But this first guidebook remains an iconic souvenir
from that memorable year when the world discovered The Happiest Place On Earth. The guidebook sold for
$1.00 and cost Disney over $1.00 to print. They sold them with mailing envelopes so that
the first visitors could send them to friends and family who would then be tempted to visit
Disneyland themselves. By all accounts, they were so successful that this is why the guidebooks
remain a staple of Disneyland merchandise to this day. This copy is in very good condition. |
Disneyland 35th Anniversary Pop-Up MapAs a part of Disneyland's 35th Anniversary celebration in 1990, they created
an unusual souvenir map. It was a pop-up map showing many of the popular landmarks. The map
measures about 24x18" and it's printed on nice heavy stock with bright colors and lots
of detail. It's one of the most popular Disneyland collectibles we know. |
Disney Stock Certificate SampleThis is a sample Walt Disney Productions stock certificate. It's from the early 1990s
and has a reproduction signature of Michael Eisner, who was Chairman of the Board at that time. We bought
it from Disney at one of the first Official Disneyana Conventions, and it's still in the original wrapper.
There is some slight staining at the top, but it is otherwise in very good condition. It measures
8-½x12". |
Disneyland ToonTown LithographIn 1993, to celebrate the opening of ToonTown, Disneyland created these
commemorative lithographs that were given to guests who stayed at The Disneyland Hotel during
that time. The litho features Mickey, Donald Duck, Chip and Dale, and Goofy. It is signed by
Disneyland President Jack Lindquist, who was one of the best presidents in the park's history. The art
measures 8-½x11" and comes in a 14x16" double mat. The litho has been covered
with a clear sheet of mylar for gloss and protection. |
EuroDisney Opening Commemorative PassportIn 1991, as a part of the promotion for the grand opening of EuroDisneyland
(now Disneyland Paris), these commemorative passports were sold in The Disney Store in the
United States and elsewhere. The passport comes in a decorative folder, and measures
4x12". The passport is intact and can still be used toward admission to Disneyland
Paris. So, "Redez-vous avec la magie" with this special Disney collectible that
features a great Sorcerer Mickey. |
Disneyland 1991 Upper Deck Trading Cards and PassportIn 1991, as a part of the promotion for the sports franchises they recently purchased,
Disney issued a special set of Upper Deck trading cards along with a commemorative passport. The cards
feature Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and Roger Rabbit in sports regalia with pictures of Disneyland in the
background. The five card set included the commemorative passport good for one adult admission to
Disneyland. The passport shows all four characters, and is still good
for a discount toward admission. These eminently collectible Disney trading cards by Upper Deck are
mounted on a 12x14" sheet of matboard that been shrinkwrapped and mounted on foamcore, ready for framing. |
Disneyland Wet Paint SignAs everyone knows, Disneyland is always being refreshed and refurbished, so they often have
to warn guests about hazards such as wet paint. This Disneyland wet paint sign features Donald
Duck and one of the nephews, and is inscribed "©1987 The Walt Disney Company". The sign
measures 11x14" and is shrinkwrapped on foamcore.

Bugs Bunny 50th Birthday Magazine with SericelIn 1990, on the heels of a similar promotion for Mickey Mouse, Warner Bros. issued
a commemorative magazine that celebrated Bugs Bunny's 50th Anniversary. The magazine included a 7x10
inch printed cel of Bugs sitting in a movie theater, complete with a nice background. The magazine
itself has all sorts of treats for fans of the Wascaly Wabbit, including interviews with Chuck Jones
and Friz Freleng, the two men most associated with Bugs over the years. Real animation fans will also
get a kick out of the dozens of "birthday cards" from famous comic strip artists from Charles
Shultz to Matt Groening. There are articles galore, including Leonard Maltin's picks of the 10 best
Bugs Bunny cartoons, and Steven Spielberg introducing "Tiny Toons" Roughly 60 pages in all.
Just a wonderful and very affordable animation collectible. |
Lion King Premiere ProgramThe culmination of the rennaisance of Disney animation, "The Lion King"
was a blockbuster hit when it was released in the summer of 1994. Disney made special souvenir
programs available in selected theaters across the US and Europe at that time. These 11x14" 30-page
programs tell the story with gorgeous pictures of the characters. This program was very different
from the other similar programs Disney had produced for other movies because it included a cel
showing the entire cast sitting atop Pride Rock. Also included was an onion skin and paper
reproduction of the original drawing for the cel. The photo below shows these cels look when matted together.
This is truly a special Lion King collectible. |
The Lion King on Broadway ProgramWe got this when "The Lion King" stage show was in San Francisco.
10x13 inches, with roughly 30 pages of gorgeous full-color photographs and a quote
on each page from one of the key creative people who made this show the spectacular
exhibition of the Disney animated feature. |
Disney's Pocahontas Commemorative ProgramThese beautiful Pocahontas programs were first sold at the Premiere In Central Park in New York
in the summer of 1995. They were later sold at six selected theaters across the country. We have two versions available,
the one from the huge Central Park premiere event, and the one from the El Capitan theater in Hollywood. These books are 11x14" and are
filled with artwork that just screams to be on a wall. Printed on heavy, glossy stock. Few promotional items give as much fan satisfaction as
these original theatrical release programs. Central Park Issue El Capitan Issue |
Hercules Theater ProgramWho put the "glad" in "gladiator"? Yes, it's Hercules. When Hercules hit theaters in
1997, Disney offered a gorgeous 24-page program filled with pictures and information about the characters. The
special bonus is two four-page fold-outs, including one that is essentially a model sheet of the main
characters and the other highlighting the wicked Hades. Sorry, Megara fans. No fold-out, but some nice
pictures here and there of the lovely Greek girl. Printed on heavy, glossy stock. 8-½x11". If you love Hercules,
then you'll want this original theatrical release program. |
Hunchback of Notre Dame El Capitan Theater ProgramHot on the heels of "The Lion King" and "Pocahontas",
Disney's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" was released in 1996 and brought the classic
Victor Hugo novel to life. Lots of information about the story, the novel its based on, and
pictures of the characters. It includes a special 8-page fold-out section commemorating the
movie's run at the El Capitan theater in Los Angeles, which is the only place you could get this version. Printed
on heavy, glossy stock. Very nice collectible! |
Hunchback of Notre Dame European Tour ProgramHot on the heels of "The Lion King" and "Pocahontas",
Disney's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" was released in 1996 and brought the classic
Victor Hugo novel to life. While American audiences had theater programs, in Europe, Disney
put on a special travelling show where they sold these souvenir programs that tell the story
in words and pictures. Among the 20+ the pages are onion skin to add a touch of elegance. A nice
fold-out section shows the characters in all of their glory. Printed on heavy, glossy stock. 8-½x11". |
Fantasia 50th Anniversary ProgramWalt's bold experiment in animation, "Fantasia" has delighted audiences
for generations. Walt specifically made "Fantasia" to show that the medium was capable of
more than cartoons and fairy tales. This program was sold in theaters during the 1990 re-release
which celebrated the movie's 50th anniversary. The 30-page 11x14" program highlights the composers, the
music, and the art with the background of how each sequence was used and why it was chosen.
Printed on heavy, glossy stock. |
The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh Comic BookIssued in 1964, this one of very few collectibles based on the popular series from Disney television "The
Scarecrow of Romney Marsh". The series starred Patrick McGoohan, the British actor who went on to
greater fame in his own TV series "Secret Agent" (a.k.a. "Dangerman") and the later cult
classic "The Prisoner" and also in movies like "Ice Station Zebra". The comic is in
fair to good condition. The front cover has some damage at the outside corners, and the back cover has a 1x1/2" piece
torn away at the bottom. But the inside pages are complete and very clear. |
