The Academy Award-winning director and creator of several famous characters for Warner Bros., Friz Freleng did work briefly for Walt Disney in the late 1920's. Friz came from Kansas City where Walt got his start with several other pioneers of animation. But he is, of course, best known as the creator of characters like Tweety Bird and Yosemite Sam. When Warner shut down the animation department in the early 1960's, he and his former boss, David DePatie created DePatie-Freleng Studios, which produced the Pink Panther series which started as short subjects and was later made into a television series. We obtained this Friz Freleng autograph in-person at an American Booksellers Association convention when Mr. Freleng was promoting his book, "Animation: The Art of Friz Freleng". Like all of the animators from that era, he was charming and gracious. A real gentleman of the arts. He also signed a poster of the character line-up for me at the time, which is one of my most prized collectibles. |
